An endemic species, Red-billed Gull is the commonest gull found in New Zealand.
Adult |
1st summer |
It is often treated as a race of Silver Gull (Larus novaehollandiae), with which it forms a superspecies along with South Africa's Hartlaub's Gull (Larus hartlaubii).
Colonies, such as the one on the Kaikoura headland, tend to be quite densely packed, and they often form mixed colonies with
White-fronted Terns.
Chicks take approximately 37 days to fledge...
After fledging, the young remain dependent on their parents for a further three weeks.
